37 Years old as of Nov 22 1995 - Yeah, 37 years old. Now how did that happen?
You know, you're getting your first driver's license, taking a few tests
in high school, college blows by, a couple of interviews, and bam!
you're, well I don't even want to think about it.
No kids yet though. Everyone else has got 'em these days - but I ain't ready
yet - still reliving those glory days when I was young - Hell, I remember
working at Amdahl in the old days, I've got stories, oh yeah - but it'll
have to wait for the movie, because you just can't experience it through
words, gotta have the visceral visual image of being there - down on the
machine floor, hundreds of green VDTs, tiles upended off the floor, cables
everywhere, the hum of the air conditioning, guys named Larry - halon raining
down, klaxons blaring - hey! what the ... where did everybody go? Damn,
knew I shouldn't have been wearing the headphones down here blasting Hendrix
- what a cleaning bill that was.
My name is Gordie Freedman and I am a hacker. And this is my story.
It was a cold and rainy night and we were deep down in the core of our Sparc.
Down there in the kernel debugger, running crash, hunting around to stick
in that special UID 0. Friday night - no beer - no gas - no money. Gotta
get into the Dungeons of Doom to steal the magic elixir. Once we do that
we've got the run of the place - yeah, a real sys admin's nightmare. You
find the right branch and you can snap it like a twig. In, baby, in. Of
course not much challenge hacking into your own machine at home, unless
your wife won't tell you the root password.
